Notes

  1. There were approximately 2,600,000 Afrikaners (60%), 1,800,000 English-speakers of British descent, 36,000 Portuguese (many refugees from Angola and Mozambique), between 80,000 and 130,000 Jews, and 10,000 Greeks.
  2. Estimates for the number of whites in Zimbabwe range between 100,000 and 70,000. The most quoted numbers are 70,000 and 90,000.
  3. There are 65,000 Afrikaners and 20,000 Germans living in Namibia. Afrikaans is the first language of over 100,000 Namibians, and is Namibia's lingua franca.
  4. Although there are only 3,000 whites officially registered in Botswana, statistics indicate 20,000 Afrikaans speakers.
